350 Utility Hydraulics won't stay up

I recently bought a 1957 350 Utility (gas), and afive foot bush hog about the same age. Tractor runs GREAT. Bushog runs GREAT. EXCEPT. While mowing or using a box blade, I have to raise the hydraulics every few minutes, because the implement being used slowly creeps down. I have a small leak around the PTO seal, however I am not familiar with hydraulic systems. The reservoir shows full, so there does not appear to be a lot of fluid loss. Any help? Thanks in advance.

Why the fix is simple.

Pour 10 Viagras into the hydraulic reservoir. That thing will stay up as long as you need it to. :)!

Mark,
The hydraulic valves on the hundred-series IH tractors are not positive-shutoff valves; i.e., they leak. What actually is supposed to hold the hitch up is a cross-check valve, which "should" be bolted to the bottom of the control valve you use to raise/lower the hitch AND have the hoses going to the hitch cylinder connected to it. This check valve is rectangular, about 5-1/4"x2-1/2"x1-1/2" thick; if it's not there, you're hitch is not going to stay up.

Assuming the check valve is there, and the hoses are attached to it, try swapping the hoses (this particular check valve only works in one direction). If that doesn't work, try checking the cylinder as described by Bob M. to see if that's the problem - note that you will have to PLUG the hoses going to the cylinder for his test to work, and for heaven's sake don't disconnect the hoses with weight on the hitch. If you do, it's going to drop in a big hurry and perhaps get somebody hurt.

Your problem is almost certainly either the check valve or the cylinder. One or both may need to be reconditioned.

Hope this helps, and please be careful.

Thanks to all of you, as I am new to old tractors, and i'm hooked. Kinda like when you just have to take a stray dog in because nobody else will. It's sometimes frustrating, but when you're done and everything works, it's great. I will try the check valve and let you know what happens. As far as the leaking fluid from the pto, is that hydraulic fluid or gear oil? I have three farmall cubs that I am about to dive into, and they seem much easier than my 350. I just wanted to share that the 350 pulled down a 45 foot pine tree in three pulls at about half throttle. ( I did cut the roots first). thanks again , Mark

In addition to the good advice below, I would add the idea that your 2PT FH cylinder (or three PT adapter on the 2PT FH) might be the cause. Block up the hitch and release all pressure by working the valve handles with the engine off. Remove the hoses from the cylinder, and plug the ports. with engine off, remove blocking (be safe) and see if the cylinder leaks down. If it does, it is in need of new piston seals. Not a bad thing, just normal for a hydraulic shop, or you if handy.
If it does not leak down, the valvs controlling the cylinder need service (probably reploaced). Good luck, let us know!

There's also a check valve. The check valve is what keeps the hitch up in the same position when you aren't operating the valve, or when the tractor is off. The check valve is what makes the buzzing or raspberry-like sound while running the hitch up or down.

Mark - Most likely problem is a bad (internally leaking) implement lift cylinder. However it could also be leaky remote control valve at the tractor.

If your cylinder hoses have quick disconnect couplers, lift the implement with the cylinder then disconnect the hoses at the couplers. (Good idea to temporarily jack the implement to take the load off the cylinder while you disconnect the hoses. Then remove the jack.)

If the implement still leaks down with the hoses disconnected, it's time for a cylinder rebuild. Otherwise the problem is the hyd valve on the tractor.
