Hang my Brush Hog from a tree?

As I get older (just South of sixty) it gets harder to wrestle the old Hog onto the back of my three point hitch. So I was thinking about converting an old but sturdy steel swing set into a Bush Hog hangar. A couple stout chains would hang down so I could hook onto to the mower deck before I let the three point down and disconnected. Then, the next time I want to hook it up, I should be able to swivel the Bush Hog marginally in three dimensions, making it an easy one-man job. Whadya think? How do you guys wrestle the Hog by yourself? Thanks.

I forgot to tell you that I also use chain on brush hog . Here in WV the bars on top give you problems when crossing a ditch . One day my neighbor borrowed tractor to mow off field & high centered on ditch & bent top link on 3 pt hitch that was when I changed top links on brush hog to chains . Works real well.

Good idea but I'd get a couple of cheap com-a-longs and use them to hang the 'hog then you can move it up or down easily as necessary

I went to Branson once a year in the late 90's, early 2000's, and on one of the short cut roads there was always a 3-pt sickle mower hanging from a tree (in the front yard of course). I always wanted to get a picture, but never did.

To easy?
“it gets harder to wrestle the old Hog onto the back of my three point hitch.” An easy solution. I park my brush hog on three or four wide steel automotive rims (example: 75r 225x15). Steel implement edges on steel dunnage. Then, with a four foot 2x4 lever I easily move mine within a few inches wherever I should need or want it.

Thanks, fellas. I appreciate all the comments. Think I'll try the swingset idea. If it works I may build something beefier. Qick Hitch sounds nice, but I'm always trading implements with FIL and neighbor, so maybe not.

Have same problem and have swingset. in reply to Kent in KC, 07-10-2007 14:15:34
Well I have the same problem but I'm only 43. I have a heavy duty swingset that just needs to be moved to the implement yard. Might be able to hang the scoop bucket as well????

When you take off a 3 pt implement remember YOU ARE THE ONE THAT HAS TO PUT IT BACK ON and you will have an easier time. My father and I use to work hard putting stuff back on until we got smart. Park the implement on a good level spot. Use the proper provided stands or make up the right size wooden blocks. Back the tractor drawbar to where the top 3 pt link goes so the tractor is in the right spot. Use a bundgee cord to hold the lift links together if you have inside pins. Use a hill (Drive sideways) if you have to offset an attachment. Write on the implement how many cranks down you have to set the adjustments.

I`ve got a 3 point conversion on my AC D-19 snap coupler drawbar. On the 3 point conversion is a Cat-2 Quick attach, and I've got a Cat-1 Quick attach that will slip right into the hook and slots of the Cat-2. So I can hook up most anything pretty easily. Have to say though the snap coupler implements are far easier to change than are any 3 point without the Quick attach.

HF Quick Hitch in reply to Kent in KC, 07-09-2007 23:59:30
I just got a Harbor Freight Quick Hitch. It seemed as though I was the lone hold out not getting one ofthese. Anyway, I've about 10 implements of various descriptions, the usual tiller, disc, rake, mower and plow stuff. Now I'm slowly making them fit the QH, one unit at a time. Mostly moving the Gantry system (toplink arm connection) holes to fit in the top hook and still connect down on the bottom draft hooks. This height dimension seems to be critical in making a good hook-up to work. Sometimes I have to take things off and redrill them, other times it's matter of just moving things around and adding a pipe spacer. The top hook lugs seem to like being 2-1/2" wide to make a quick connection. Each implement is different. The neighbors aren't gonna like this at all, cause now unless they got the Harbor Freight QuickHitch they won't be able to connect up easily when they want to borrow a implement. bjr

You say that like it is a bad thing.

I actually have pretty decent neighbors and we do try and help each other when we can. So, Yes, I thought to myself and I being "mean" by doing this? Should I be selfish thinking of my sore back? Then I thought, the way this'll happen is now it don't fit no one else's tractor, so, I'll just have to go over with my tractor and my fuel and my implement and do the work, anyhow. So it's probably good news for the neighbors. Sometimees you just never win. bjr

Hang it? I think that's a little extreme. I'd just slap it till it comes around!lol Seriously tho a guy in farmshow paper rigged something similar up for all of his 3 pt equipment. My back isnt so great and i am thinking similar thoughts myself. But a swing set would be way too light, but a heavier version might work.

Setting it on a 4 by 4 works for me. I use a chain combination on the top link, so that is flexable. I know! that has been discussed, but I want mine to be able to give when on uneven ground.

I also use a chain for the top link on my brush hog. However after all of the stuff I have read on here about the supposed dangers I made a modification. I found a piece of sched 40 pipe that just fit over the chain. Then I cut a length of it that would be short enough to let the mower float yet should stop it from coming up too much. I put that over the chain between the mower and tractor. To keep it from rattling I drilled a small hole in each end of the pipe and wired it to the chain. I have a hard time seeing how the mower can flip up and hit me with the pto shaft to stop the movement, but I also see no reason to temp fate.

sounds like a good idea to me, however i'm not sure a swing set would hold that much weight up. i'd be tempted to make me one out of steel. also set the tail wheel down on a piece of plywood to make it easier to roll it back and forth, as well as being able to give the wheel a push to one side or the other. i've seen some real neat 3 pt quick conversion to quick hitchs some where and i thought it was on this site, but i couldn't find them. they had photos of them. to the guy who'es son was interested in the place. i had a friend whoes son was the same way. i told him to leave the farm to him but with the stipulation that he had to keep it up for 5 or 10 years before he could sell it. i told him if he hadn't develpoed a love for the land after that then there would never be in hope for him. the guy did that and the son now lives onthe place. he rents the biggest part of it out, but he's learned to love the place now. as he gets older the place will mean more to him any way.

I set the front of mine on two 6"X6"X12" then hook left side up first . then use leveling jack on right side to a-line right side up . The rest is easy I am on high side of the 60's. Have always had to do things by myself have never had help have Son that is 40 but that isn't his bag of worms . Some day when something happens to me it might come back to bite him in the a?s . The farm might go to some one else not someone that isn't interested .

My three-point upper link is a hydraulic cylinder. It is amazing how much it helps in both hookup and use of implements.
