Try this one. 5x8 piece of 3/16 steel, save what you cut out for the drawbar for the tabs.

Here is the one that "came" with mine. I've seen others like it so i suspect that some company made them. It is hard to see in the photo but the corners of the flat bar are turned up to contain the lift arms on the bottom, and the J bolts hook it on the top. This one sure is sturdy but not the easiest to make yourself although it is possible....HTH Tim

Here's a quick and dirty one I buzzed together out of scrap rebar and and scrap i-beam section I liberated from the junk pile at work. One of the ibeam sections also has a 5/8 or 3/5 bolt welded to it to go into a hole in the 11 hole drawbar.

The d-ring was laying around in my garage.. worked great for something that was free and took 5 minutes to weld up.

I made a simple lock, sorry I don't have a picture, took a large bolt about 10 inches long put it through the last hole in the drawbar, bent it so it lined up with the liftarm, put a u-bolt over it to hold it to the lift arm. works fine for me.

Rob, how is the lock in your photo mounted to the lift arm? I need to make one of those. Thanks.

It just lays against the lift arm. in reply to hvw, 10-06-2004 03:06:18
It keeps the drawbar from rolling backward. That long skinny bolt just lines things up. If that was a j-bolt it could hook over the top of the lift arm. I ended up nutting a piece of slotted angle-iron to the end of the long bolt to keep the drawbar from rolling forward. The angle-iron is only a couple inches long and is loose on the bolt. I just flip it over the lift arm. The bar would roll forward when there was no trailor on the ball.
Fact is, when the ball is clamped in the receiver it only rolls so far. I suppose years of banging on the receiver would cause a problem if you don't lock the drawbar.

i need to pull trailers and use the three-point for skidding daily, got tired of dropping the trailer every time i backed up..i took a bale-fork, welded a bar across the end, punched a hole in it and dropped a ball hitch in...third arm allows you to back up without lifting when pressure is applied in reverse....worked for me, the only problem that i have now is that the extra length makes the front a bit lighter..

Pretty simple. You don't really need the offset especially if you mount to the bottom of the drawbar.

I know that Red Rock Mfg. has just released a new old design that I had never seen before. It's a solid chunk of cast iron that fits over the drawbar and the lift arm and even has clearances for the stabilizer bars. A little hefty for a piece of cast iron, but still very nice looking, sturdy, and built to last.
