I noticed that the TISCO red and grey paints are available in spray cans (including on this site). Has anyone tried this approach? I'm guessing this might be just as good as and a lot easier than using a compressor for the red on cast iron.

(cut & pasted from an earlier post of mine about paint)

I painted my 8N this spring, using Ford-NewHolland paint for the gray and the red and was very pleased with both. It is called "Factory Match Finish Paint". The gray is: Gray Enamel (39/62)M1J-957-SE5DS and the red I used was Red Enamel 70780DS. I think the gray is very very close to the original gray. In some light it looks kind of brown, but outside in sunlight it is very nice.

I painted the sheet metal on my 52 8N workhorse with TSC Ford Grey spray paint - doing large areas are very hard. It looks ok for a work tractor though. I did all the smaller stuff on my NAA Rustbucket with Tisco spray paint and it turned out great. The trick is to put on a very light first coat (the Tisco spray paint runs pretty easily), let it dry a minute or two to get sticky to hold the next layer from running, then add a little thicker coat, wait a little longer than the first time, then put a nice coat on the hird time - get the ENTIRE surface wet but not enough to run, just get it wet. It will look like a professional air sprayer did it.

However; on the cast I would still recommend brush painting. The cast hides the brush marks very good, and you can get the paint on nice and thick and put hardeners in if you want (use proper ventilator masks).

Good luck,
Dan

Very refreshing to read about other folks that use the rattle can paint for the sheet metal and a brush on the cast iron parts. I know it works, and if done properly, will give excellent results. You guys know it works also, anytime I mention this method over on the Farmall board I get shot down. I'll never get rid of my Farmalls, but I just might have to add a Ford or two to the collection.

Wow, I was told by the guy where i buy most of my stuff that ford grey was not avaliable and it was a custom mix item from the automotive paint place, this is great news. Where can I get the TSC paint? Also, he said International red was "close enough" to Ford red and more easily available, is this true?

The TSC (Tractor Supply Company) Ford Grey used on my 52 8N tractor is way too white compaired to the original color. The Tisco Ford Medium Grey is a dead ringer and used on this tractor. The TSC New Holland Red (NOT Ford Red) is closer to the original color as well. I also have the TSC New Holland Red on this NAA tractor as well. This combination is pretty close to the original colors.

I couldn't agree more. Last night I painted the headlights off my 9n with TSC Ford Grey, and that stuff is way too WHITE. They should label it Ford White, not Grey. I had already sanded and primed the lights, so it kind of irritated me that the color was not even close to original. Fortunately, we are going to tear the tractor down this winter to repaint the whole thing, and the rattle can was just used to keep the lights from rusting.
