I have finally got the darned thing off my 2-44 loader backhoe. It was hell - lots of bruises on my head!
Have taken the pump apart...manual says:
Shafts should be over 0.746 inch (0.748)
Gear width should not be below 1.137 inch (1.139)
Bearing inside diameter should not exceed 0.752 inch (0.746)
Gear pockets should not exceed 2.002 inch (1.996)
In brackets are my average readings, which are within those limits, but since I do not have any experience with these things, I thought I would ask the experts before I put it all back together with the new seals kit I have. I will kick myself if it still leaks!
I took it all apart because oil was leaking out through front shaft seal. The only other observation I have is that there is some scoring to the front plate drive shaft bearing cylinder and some nicks at the front edge of that - perhaps someone did it levering out a shaft seal without a full pump rebuild in the past? Due to this, there is a tiny bit of circumferential wear at this point on the drive gear shaft.
Any advice? See photos...

I would have tested the pressure first before removing it from the tractor. If I were you, I would clean up anything that could cause wear in the pump, and put the new seal kit in and give it a go. Other than the leak, did the pump seem to work okay? As long as everything is within specs, the new seals should clean it up. I would see this as a last chance before rebuild, or replacement.

Only had it a couple of weeks. All was working pretty good, but then while snow clearing, I noticed yellow line in snow (not the yellow snow you usually see!)...and it was REALLY leaking - not much point testing it with that leak. But maybe someone can test it locally before it goes back on?

I wouldn't see why not someone couldn't test it. If you have wear in the shaft, you may want to check around and replace the shaft while doing the seals. I have no experience with those pumps, but do know that new seals make a world of difference, especially on a pump that old. When I replaced my pump on my 55, the first thing I did was remove the old seals and o-rings even though they were good. That way I know it was done properly and that should be one of the few things to fail on me. With a backhoe and the heavy pressure on the pump, it could very easily blow a seal.

Funny, now I look at this shot, when I replaced the end shaft seal, I was able to seat the new one much deeper than the old one is seated. Either it got forced out (I doubt that) or it was not replaced properly. It needs to be carefully forced down fairly hard using a sleeve and a good tap with a hammer.
All this damage makes me think someone tried to replace that shaft seal with the pump still on the tractor, without a full rebuild.

Have not had time to look at the pictures in detail. Remember the 2 major causes of front seal failure are: Bad Seal and or the pump has excessive internal wear. Start here. Put the shafts back in, Attach the center plate (where the gears run) to the front plate. Take a feeler gauge and measure the wear between the teeth and gear plate on the SUCTION side with the gear pushed over tight toward the pressure side. Then gat back with us. J.

 Re: gear/body gap - hydraulic pump (550 - 2/44) in reply to J Schwiebert, 03-29-2008 18:56:22
Hello again John,
I think I follow you. Pulling the gear toward me, on the pressure side, that opens up a slight gap on the suction side between the gear teeth ends and the centre plate internal face, right?
The gap is between 0.002 and 0.003 on the short gear side and less than 0.002 on the longer drive shaft gear side.

When I re-assemble this unit, am I meant to push that bronze-faced diaphragm down hard over the gear pocket/drive shaft bushings, or will it do that when I torque up the whole thing at the end? Because as it is right now, the body will not go really tight to the front plate. So my meansurement above is with about a 1mm gap between body and front plate...but the dowels are hard in....
many thanks, John.

Update. John, I have now bolted the three parts together which has seated that bronze plate nicely. My torque wrench deos not go high enough, so I have to borrow a bigger one to get up to 27-30 ft pounds.

Shall I take the back plate off again and re-run that gap measurement?

Damage has resulted in wear to drive shaft.
Other than these photos, everything else looks pretty good in there.
Thanks in advance.

If anyone has a pump similar to this for sale, please let me know. I have a 550 with a trip loader that needs down pressure!

From manual:
Pump should operate at 17 gpm if in good condition, but have not measured it.
Max operating pressure is 2250 psi.

Latest update. I have replaced all seals, and will test it for pressure and gpm when I get the engine fired up again.
Failing that, I have located [amazing this!] new/old stock gears/shafts and body center plate from Maibach tractor.
That should help if another rebuild is called for.
