1655 power beyond

just finally finished up the new loader valve set up. for refresher it is a 3 spool valve. we installed it according to how we were told by you guys (THANKS :) ) and by the directions.

i apologize to Myron KY - i am stealing his picture that he posted in response to one of my Qs a while back.

IN THE PIC: of the three ports outlined - i used the top port as my supply/pressure line. then i used the bottom port as the return line - b/c it is a 3 spool valve (1 for loader, 1 for bucket, one for hugger). the pressure line is 1/2" and the return is 3/4". the valve itself - has only an inlet and outlet - only the two ports.

SOOOOO, i fired the tractor up, activated the loader valve handle. i can see pressure building in the line, but nothing happened. then i tried the other handles - same thing.

basic question that i can never remember - is the 1655 closed center or open center??? the valve is set up as open at factory but is convertable.

I was about 2/3 asleep when I did the post last night. Power beyond is only found on open center systems. I also think the screw head you are talking about on the inlet side is the relief valve for the Cross valve. If it is set at 1500 which is a fairly common setting it will also limit your tractor remotes and 3 point to 1500. See if you can find some paper work on your valve. All the power beyond systems I work with have an inlet port, the port to furnish hydraulic power down stream and the drain port for the first valve. 3/4 inch inlet and return ports are also common for that size valve. Questions? Post on HPOCA site and I will send you some information on Power beyond we used to pass out in hydraulic fundamentals classes.

the reason i say it is the open center/closed center capscrew is b/c that is what it calls it in the literature that came with the valve. i dont know what that means in terms of pressure relief then. there are a couple of cap screws on top of the valve - perhaps one of them is the pressure relief??

What is the chance of getting a photocopy of that piece of literature? Also you asked about the 3/4 inch retrun line. Remember when the cylinders retract more oil comes out than what goes to the other end of the cylinder. Mowing lawn lets you think all kinds of good things.

i sent you an email with the diagram.

as for the return line... it seems like the 3/4" line isnt a complete waste b/c the line will hold some extra oil too, even though it will be squeezed thru the 1/2" hole. do you think thats accurate? considering the exponential difference in cost between 1/2" and 3/4" hoses, i want to feel somehwat justified in my getting the 3/4" hose...

Remove the plug labeled inlet port, there is another threaded area a couple of inches inside. I think it takes a quarter inch pipe plug-has to be one with an allen head. Replace the outside plug. This will put the oil through the valve then back to the system. Just remember to remove the plug or install a jumper hose if you take take the valve off.

Spools and ports are not the same thing. I do not know what brand of valve you have, but I am used to Commercial and Gresen. Notice the picture said for two port and three port. You have a 2 port valve so you say. Now is your valve a power beyond valve. All the power beyond valves I worked with need a seperate drain line. explain your remote valve a little better. Did you change the plug inside the cover? Do the tractor remotes and 3 point work

well i feel like an idiot - 3 spool, two port. DUH. thanks for clearing that up. that means i messed up big time. so my return line should go into the middle hole depicted above. ARRRRG, does that mean i got a 3/4" hose by mistake??? if it is a 1/2" port why have a 3/4" line?

i did plug that hole in the housing - 3/8" hole by the way. and i have my 1/2" pressure line coming from that hole - the top hole depicted above.

the valve itself: it has a 3/4" inlet on one side, the 3/4" outlet and the capscrew for the open/closed center on the other side. on top it has 6 - 1/2" holes for the hoses to the loader, etc. it says it is a power beyond valve. it is made by CROSS.

does anyone remember if the 1655 is closed or open center? i cant find our book on the darned thing....

when Myron KY wrote up the lines in the pic - why did he say "exhaust" and "bypass" as if they are two different things? what is the difference?

I labeled those ports as they are labeled in the Oliver Service Manual. I have that page, of the manual, scanned and can e-mail it to you. It may help clear things up. I've unblocked my e-mail above.

BTW, It's an open center system.
