 04:17 01/12/17  Case 830/841 COM rebuild
I have decided to invest(?) some money into the Case we bought this Summer. The clutch drags and the valve guides seem worn, maybe an exhaust valve sticking too. The list is a lot longer that that and I will deal with those things one at a time. We need this tractor for snow blowing, hay and manure. Also occasional field work. I am really looking forward to getting this tractor to run like it should. I can get by like it is but I am sure the neighbor a 1/4 mile away looks out his window and mumbles every time I shift. We had a melt off recently and the road to the barn is solid ice. The tractor won't be coming up that hill anytime soon anyway so this is a good week for it.

Yesterday I bought a 2 ton engine hoist, 3 ton jack, 2 big jack stands, parts washer, arbor press and a couple of little things. Its all harbor frieght stuff(junk?) and it will have to do. I also cleaned the shop up a bit and set up tables to lay out the parts. Set up a salamander to keep our backsides warm as it will be in the single digits for a few days. A good friend is showing up tomorrow for a week. I hope to have it back together before he leaves.

Today I will assemble all the stuff I bought, maybe pull the loader too. Tomorrow we will pull the heads and get them to the shop, then start to split the tractor. My wife will be taking pictures throughout the process and I will post them hear.

Pulled off the loader, took longer than I expected.

Compression test showed 125'125'115'125 and all went up 5 psi with oil added. Not sure about the lower end, oil pressure was 25-35. A friend is coming over to look at it.

Removed sheet metal and pulled the heads. Found the lower end of the push rod to have flat spots from wear. Lots of crud on the head and around the oil passages. Hopefully the cam is ok.

Not much accomplished yesterday. Picked up grain for the hogs in the morning. Pulled the radiator and water pump, started scraping thick layers of black stuff out from around the steering. Should be above freezing this week and we will pressure wash that area. The metal in the water pump looked great but it hard hard deposits that I believe are from the stop leak I put in there. I can only imagine how much that plugged up the radiator(it didn't help).

That lower unjointed is shot, it will be nice to take that slack out of the system. Today we will drop the pan and split the tractor. I am debating wether I should go ahead and rebuild the lower half of the engine. It's an expensive job on this one.

Pulled the converter, and the entire pto shaft. It is stuck in the converter. Closer inspection of the engine leads me to believe a liner is leaking. Looks like an engine rebuild now. Ill wait for the parts to arrive before I disassemble the torque converter.

At this point I may as well take the block to be cleaned and checked for cracks. This is also a good opportunity to get the front end into a welding shop.

Main clutch piston was a mess. Engine bearings are rough. Crank has grooves. It's a good thing I decided to rebuild

Pulled the pistons and crank today. The cam looks good.

Stripped the block and it is now ready for the shop.

Back and forth buying tools. Having the right puller or roll pin punch makes it a lot easier. I am finding grooves worn into any area where sealing rings rode. Not sure what to do about that yet.

Installed the first new parts today when i put the thermostat into the water manifold. Two boxes of parts showed up, waiting on a couple more.

The machine shop is flipping the ring gear and putting a sleeve on the front pulls where the front seal rides.

Pulled the pto off today. It took 6 hours due to things just being old and stuck. Lots of thick white crud in there, even after running good clean fluid for a few months. It will be good to get it cleaned out.

I found the pto clutches warped which explained the pto brake not holding. A pto engaging finger is broken and a bearing is making noise. The screen is totally disintegrated from the pump intake, looks i will be able to replace it with metal window screen.

More cleaning and disassembly today. Looks like the pto clutch had been up against the gears in the rear end at some point. Not sure how that happened, maybe it was way out of adjustment at some point. The Hydraulic pump is cracked, strange as the loader worked fine. I just pulled the pump because i saw bubbles in the oil and thought it might need a new intake seal.

I also dropped of the block to have it cleaned, magnafluxed, liners pulled and cam bushings replaced.

Starting to assemble the engine now. Sleeves, pistons and crank in. Cam and timing cover on, still waiting on a govenor bearing. Oil filter mount, water pump also on.

While I wait for one other part i am cleaning up the brakes and replacing the discs. Look like one was caked in oil over the years but I don't see a leak. The "freeze plug" seems dry so it may be the shaft seal. Its external so I can deal with that later.

PTO engagement fingers were found damaged and replaced. Now waiting on bearings.
 10:10 04/14/17  Fired up
Started the tractor today. Then the alternator pulled forward and hit the fan which damaged the radiator. No leaks so far. Fixed it. Restarted and it runs well, 62psi at idle. COM pressure is near the top of the Case gauge. Ill check at the pump later. Shifting gears works well. No grinding so far. I did notice the COM fluid is foamin g so I have to figure that out.

Ill let it cool now and readjust the valves, reassemble the body and take it out for a spin.
