My book says all D series tractors serial numbers were located on the front of the torque housing on the left side sitting on the tractor seat including the D-21 if that helps. You may have to take a wire wheel to expose it because someone may have loaded it up with paint over the years. You've gotta remember some of these tractors are close to 50 years old and may have several coats of paint.CT

I'd bet your book isn't an official AC book....and I think I would trust the operators manual before I would some data book or IT manual!

Eldon is correct on where the D-19 serial number is. Back by the seat. The D-17 is on the left side by the clutch housing.

My D19 has a number at both locations. Different numbers. One on torque tube makes it a 61 and one on rear housing makes it a 62. I have never seen another D19 with a number on the torque tube.

I think you can find it also on the left side on the torque tube housing.

It is stamped in the rear end casting behind the seat on the right side. It will start with D19-

May be hydraulic hoses covering it up.

They were all stamped by that same guy, and in the same place. But later, in the tavern, he couldn't remember and told a few people they were stamped somewhere else, and now everyone wants to argue. But then when they actually find the number, back below the seat, they never seem to be heard from again.
