I was using my wd45 today and ran out of gas. I accidently left the switch on and came back about four hrs later and tractor would not start. I got the battery back up and the tractor will not fire. It is getting gas and the points, condensor, and plugs are new. I am usually pretty good on these, but I'm stumped. Could anything have burned up with me leaving the switch on? (it is on the 12 volt system with reducer)

I agree with old.. if the battery discharged thru the points.. check them.. they may be welded, burnt, .. may have melted the insulating grommet at the arm.. if it has a plastic rubbing block that may have melted and close dthe gap.. etc.

if it ain't the points.. next place to look is the coil... if it ain't that.. check the condensor for the heck of it.. though it shouldn't fail from voltage being left on it.. etc.

It will be either the points and/or coil like Old stated. Usually the points will burn up when the switch is left on,so that's where I would check first. Rick

Did the same thing once and the top of the coil blew off.

I've ran out of gas a couple of times and forgot the switch in the run position for the night... recharged the batterie and it fire right up. Probably I was just lucky enough that the points were in the open position but I noticed that the coil would heats up if the switch is on the run position without the engine running.

You left the switch on so most likely you fired the new points and or burned out the coil. I would just bite the bullet and buy a new set of points and try that. If that doesn't work then you probably burned up the coil also

Yes the points could be burnt, that would be the first thing to check if you are not getting fire to the plugs. Then could be resister then coil then the voltage reducer, any of them could be fryed with switch left on that long. B W

I would check the points. Sometimes I think they can get pitted or go bad if the switch is left on. Just a guess. What I usually do to check for fire is pull the distributor cap off and operate the points with a screw driver being careful not to short them out and hold the coil wire close to a ground. If it fires everytime you open the points then it should be getting fire if the cap is good. Hope you get it going. Lloyd
