Check out the article on "What kind of oil I should use" in the Maintainance and Mechanical section under research and info. There are many opinions but this hits the nail on the head. Todays oils are 100 times better than they were even 25 years ago. This should put you on the right track.

Manual calls for 30 wt. 6 qts. Use a non detergent or else being it is an old engine it will burn oil if you use a detergent oil. Use fram 159 filter.

I use 15w-40 diesel rated oil for all older gas engines. Most new oil has had the anti-wear agent ZDDP reduced. It was shorting the life of the oxygen sensor and cat converter. This additive is really needed to stop camshaft/lifter wear. Diesel rated oil still has enough ZDDP. I think the older SL rated gasoline oil was the last to have the higher level of ZDDP. SM,SG to newest does not have enough protection.

30W is just fine but use a detergent type oil or you will sledge up the engine. Also be sure to use the correct oil filter or you will not have oil pressure WIX57011 I think is the correct number

Old has it backwards. If it has lots of sludge buildup from using non detergent oil, continue with the ND oil. Detergent oil will loosen the sludge and circulate it through the system. Since a WD has a bypass filter system, the sludge, dirt, etc goes through the bearings. Not a good thing. Pull the side cover and see what it looks like. Clean, use detergent oil, full of sludge, use ND oil.
