I had to replace the cap that goes over the points on my allis B, this tractor has a magneto. Their is a small gear behind that cap that meshes with another gear in front of the points-The question is how do I connect those two gears correctly to time the tractor? Right now my tractor is just back-firing when I try and start it. Many Thanks

If you pull the front plug (#1) and place your thumb over the hole and crank the tractor until you feel air being pushed out of the cylinder. then check in the hole in the torque tube for the TDC mark. Once you have that, turn the rotor to the timing mark at the point #1 cylinder fires and install the cap, That will have it timed, Bob

Try this, assuming your mag is the typical FMJ. Scroll to the end for a method to time the internal gears if the gear markings are missing.

Send me an e-mail and I'll send you a manual for that mag which will explain how to time it and all

On the little steel gear on the armature shaft, turn the bevelled tooth straight up. On the fiber gear in the cap, there should be a sticker showing A and C. Turn the C straight down and mesh them together. If no sticker, perhaps someone has made an indicator mark of some sort.

I see the beveled gear, with it straight up does that mean number one piston is up? The sticker is gone from the other gear, unfortunately no marks on the gear itself. Any ideas? Can I point the rotor to number-one plug position on the cap? Thank-you!

OK, I have a cap in my hand now. Turn the rotor so that it points straight down, having the flat of the rotor shaft on top toward the high tension rod hole. Now turn it around so that the rod hole is on top. You will see a gear tooth is on top pointing toward the rod hole. Now count COUNTER-clockwise, the top tooth being #0, to the notch between #4 & #5 teeth. Mark it. That is the C position which needs to hook over the bevelled armature gear tooth.
