I am restoring my grandpa's 1938 AC-B. It has riveted front rims. I need at least one replaced. I think the other is ok. Does anyone know someone who has this rim? It would be a 15inch by 3inch rim that is riveted to the hub.

If your wheel centers are good and all you need are the rims replaced you have the options of new blank rims or used ones off of 5 bolt centers. By drilling out the rivits from the inside they are easyly removed. The rivit spacing on the old rims won't match the spacing on the newer rims. If you weld the replacement rim to the wheel from the inside you can use the heads of the old rivits to fill the holes in the old wheel and from the outside they will look like originals. Another option is carry the wheel center to a junk yard and check the fit on 15 inch temporary spares, with the idea of using the narrow rims only on your wheels. Not all 15 inch spare tire "Dounut" rims fit perfect. Get ones that do. It is a bit of a job getting the rims off the spare centers. Some cutting and grinding required. They are a bit wider than the old AC but not enough to notice after mounting a tire. I have done several this way including replacing rims on 38B cast wheel centers. New blank rims are a bit pricey.

If you remember there was a rubber inner wear liner that covered the rivets. Remember too that the rivets were the "old type" and not the new pop rivets everyone knows of these days.

I have that rim-sorta. It is the rim center, it would need the remains of the outer rim (where the tire goes) removed and replaced. The hub is fine. Lanselot1993@aol.com if youre interested

AC, I had the same problem, found replacement rims at Tony Carbaugh's. You buy the rims only, remove the eight rivets that hold the rim to the center of the wheel, press the rim on to the center and align. Then drill and re-rivet with, I believe 5/16" rivets. Not a bad job all in all. I dont know if Tony advertises here, easy to search for on the net. Found the site attached below.

Champman,
This is the idea I had. My concern was the innertube being punctured and/or fatigued. Do you have to put anything b/n the rivet and the tube? Or did you simply rivet them and throw a tube in? How long have they lasted?

Depends on how good a job you get riviting them, All car wheels used to be rivited like that and the rivits would hold air for tubless tires. They never needed a flap in them as the rivits were tight and smooth enough that they did not hurt the tube. Now if you get a bad rivet job or are just worried about it just wrap the center of the rim with a couple layers of duck tape.
