I just bought my first far tractor. My dad has many different kinds and models, and our family business deals with lawn and garden equipment so I am no stranger to equipment. My question is my tractor is an Allis Chalmers WC. I bought it because of the farm I just bought, in old pictures the original owners had a WC. My question is, I can't find the kill switch, on dads Allis chalmers it has a push button mag ground, is this what it's supposed to have, and where should it be located? The tractor seems pretty original, it's styled and the serial puts it at 1941. Rear rubber is almost new, paint is faided and a little peeled. mechanically sound, runs good, and no bends or dents in metal! just needs some TLC

well the reverse lockout must be broken because we can put it in reverse anytime...the thin rod does go down into the tower and it moves so the problem must be internal....is this an easy thing to fix???

on the topic of the shutoff...there is a hole in the bracket that holds the choke wire and then down where the choke wire hooks into to pivot there is another dangling free.....it looks as though this had that style shutoff on it at one time...now it has the little wire on the bottom of the mag that you stand next to the tractor and push up on the wire and touch the magneto case to ground out the tractor....does this mean the mag was changed at on time??

also i am wondering what should be on the end of the shift lever...it doesn;t look like a knob was on it, it has a little wire running the lngth of the shift rod and up to a little lever at the end of the shifter...what was that for?

The shift lever had a knob on it for shifting, but next to the knob was a metal bracket that was connected to the thin rod that ran the length of the shifter, and went down into the transmission. On the bottom of that rod was a spring and another metal bracket. You pulled the lever to release the shifter to go to the right, then down into reverse gear. Purpose? to make it easier to find 3rd and 4th gear, rather than go far enough to hit reverse.

My 42 has a reverse lock out on the shift knob. That rod runs down along side of the shift rod into the top of the shift tower, and pulls up the lock out to go into reverse.

so...which way should mine be? if i remember right it has a little holder, like the one holding the choke rod, just dangling up by the choke...maybe mine was supposed to have the long rod, but someone changed the mag and eliminated it? anyone have pics of this...it's hard to see whats supposed to be correct when this is the only one i have really looked closely at

On the 41s if it still has the original magneto there was a mechanical switch that is up on the steering column by the choke control. It's another heavy wire rod similar to the one that engages the choke. This type of mag is hard to find as AC later adopted a simpler kill switch. Kip

If your WC has a magneto, there should be a sheet metal type spring lever on the side of the magneto for grounding the low voltage mag circuit. That was the standard setup. The owner had to be on the ground near the front to kill the engine. Some owners rejected that plan and just put it in 4th and let out the clutch (engine at slow idle). That plan wasn't much good for the engine and clutch. Later, some realized that a wire could be connected to the top of the lever and run to the operator position. A switch could then be added to kill the mag. Some switches were single contact so the switch grounded the wire when pushed in. Others had two contacts where the second contact was run to ground.

My Dad's new WC in 1946 came from the factory with the pull wire mounted on the steering column. Right along side of the choke.
