AC 190 gas--looking at one

Greetings,

I'm going to look at a gas 190 with a loader.

Needing advice on what to look for.

I could use any thoughts on what they're worth, too.
It's about the size I want.

Any and all advice is much appreciated.

Enough said, but if you want to read on for specifics:

Other than fuel consumption, is there anything notorious on these?

It's older, and has been worked, and told it needs some tlc.

I was told it grinds a little going into gear--I imagine that could come from idle or clutch adjustment, to a new clutch, trans, or?
Is there anything that is uniquely expensive to repair, that I should look for? Would it require an abnormal amount of rare, expensive, hard-to-make special tools? It will need some work, parts, manuals, probably a few special tools--I don't mind, but I don't want to wind up with $20,000 and the rest of my spare time for life in it, either.

About me: I was a mechanic for years, but I'm fairly new to tractors.

I generally buy older vehicles in need of repair, then enjoy learning the specific vehicle as I get to know it by working on it--whether down to the bare frame, or less. IF I sell something, I never figure in much if anything for my labor--It may be a sickness, addiction, or hobby--I'm not sure. I've been told I'm a fool for it, but making somebody a good deal is priceless.

I don't farm, but I have a little land. I'm always doing something, and would like a larger tractor than I have, to help. It would be more for occasional use, not long hours, and used for a variety of chores. I don't need the "perfect" tractor for my needs--don't know what that would be, anyway.

Thanks again,

Dan

Hi all,

Well, I'm happy to report back that I bought it.

Its got a few things that need ironed out,

but I think its a good one.

It should do everything I need it to do (and then some).

I'll go back and pick it up in a couple weeks.

I'm sure you'll be hearing more from me :)
Thanks again,

Dan

Much appreciated, gentlemen.

I'll look it over, and drive it to check the gears.

Good to NOT hear they are problem tractors, in general.

12,000 hours plus, that's encouraging.

I'd like to bring it home, but there will always be more if I don't.
I believe I'll be going Sunday.

I'll check back for more replies,
and I'll post back to let you all know how it goes.

Big thing on them is dome like to jump out of gear and if they do that, that can be big $$ to fix. Drive it and make sure it stays in all gears and doesn't jump out of any of them

My Dad has a 190XT gas that was his main tractor for about 20 years. He bought in 1977. I remember him saying he felt like he was on top of the clinic building as his main tractor before was a D17. We really thought we had something. It does drink fuel but not as bad a 4020 or 806 gas. Sounds as the clutch may need work on the one you're looking at. Dad put in one clutch in those 20 years. It needs a hydraulic pump now. Being yours is a gas the tranny and rear end most likely would be in good shape due to less torque and the inability to turn up the hp. Dad's only problem there was an axle bearing went out but I probably am to blame for that as that summer I was moving rounds bales about as fast as the tractor would go when I hit a hole so hard I hit the cab roof and rang my bell. Dad didn't like that. I thought I had broke the axle for a second. Later that fall the axle bearing on the side went out. The outside race was cracked. Other than that he really worked it hard and had good luck with it with over 12,000 hours before he retired it. You might want to be sure the wiring harness is in good shape especially where it lays on the torque tube as that is where they can rub and short causing a fire, gas or diesel.
