i'd like to know what the impulse spring should look like. because i purchased a replacement and it is not shaped the same as the one i took out. the tractor is a Allis Chalmers B. The magneto is an FMJ, serial number 4919138 4B3. Please help me. Thank you.

The main spring looks like a short clock spring. I have one out at home and can give the width and length tomarrow or maybe this aftermoon. You also have two hair springs on the weights under the spring cover. The hair springs force the weights out to catch the stop pin that in turn loads up the impluse spring. The main spring very seldom breaks.

I'm Back all in the same day. The spring is 1/4" wide with about a 3/16" loop at the outer end. This loop is where the spring fastens in the retainer cover. The spring has 4 complete turnes plus 1/2" with a 3/16" 90 bend at the end,from the out side winding in. After the spring is installed it takes two complete turns to load the spring. Hope this helps.
