The 39 B that I just purchased has its pan seat, not the black bench seat. Is this normal for this year? Its a pretty basic model, no elect, crank start, lever breaks. Just your basic potato farmer's machine (with plow and cultivator).

Also, I hear that implements are hard to find, that true? (I'm in eastern PA)

Thanks

Steve,
If the seat incorporates a shock absorber, it's probably a Monroe seat. They were dealer installed options at first, then most manufacturers made them optional. I have one on my '39 RC and on my '49 Farmall M. I have an old ad for them in JPG format I can send if you're interested.

Phil

Could you send me that Monroe seat ad. My e-mail is winbigleph@cbpu.com I have one on a JD H and one on a JD A. It's easy to see why they were popular compared to factory seats. Thanks, Paul

Phil,

Bless your little pea-pickin' heart. You just redeemed the sanity of a little old lady that I bought my 1950 Model B from.

When I bought the Model B, it came with a pan seat mounted to the transmission housing with a saddle bracket. It has a Monroe shock absorber and a coil spring directly under the seat. The lady swore on a Bible that the tractor came from the dealer in 1950 with that seat on the tractor. Her husband had used the tractor until he died in 1973 at which time she sold it to her neighbor, a strawberry farmer, who used it until I bought it.

Everyone who has seen the tractor said that it could not have come on the tractor. What evidently happend was that the seat was installed as an option before the tractor was delivered.

Under the orange paint is red paint. I figured that it must have been an aftermarket item, but had no idea how or from whom. Thanks for the information. It adds a little more to the history and uniqueness of the tractor.
