I would pass on the 9600. Look at a 6600 or 7600 instead. How big is the farm? What size plow do you have? Is the land hilly? Start smaller and work your way up as you can afford to.

my farm is 100 acres and somwhat hilly i have a 4 bottom plow and a friend has a 5 bottom he said i could use.they are asking $4000 for the 9600 and it seems the smaller tractors are more expensive to buy but probably less to fix. i haven't seen any 6600 or7600 fords i've seen a 5000 and 7000 but were $8000 and several 3000 and 4000 models i like fords but other brands except belarus i would consider i have until hay season to decide thank you very much for your input, todd

How much "heavy" work are you going to do? My brother has a retired 200A farm, when he was in the business he traded a Ford 5000 for a Massey 1100. The repairs on the Massey ate him alive. For what little plowing and fitting he could have had it done custom. Can you lease the 9600 and apply the fee to the purchase price? Try it out for a day to see how it handles the plow? If anything is badly worn, or it doesn't handle smartly look else where. The 1100 would bale nicely, put the 540 shaft on 1000 and let it idle. Don't ever open it up though.

The 3000 is too small, later models 5000 are nice particularly with the power shift hi/lo. Don't consider a 6000, 8000 or anything with SOS (select-o-speed).

Once had a guy advise me that old stuff belonged to museiums, and he could never make a living from it.

i'm not sure what you mean by putting the540 shaft on 1000 and let it idle. is it a test to check the pto? that would be most helpful, any little tricks to test a machine before would be greatly appreciated.how do you tell if it is a sos tranny? this tractor has a the shifter on the console does it mean its a sos? why are the sos tranny's bad? thanks for the info i'll be sure to steer clear of the sos models but i'm not sure how to tell other than if it says sos on it thanks todd

The SOS transmission is a power shift on the fly 10 spd fwd 2 rev. the shifter is a lever on the center console just below the steering wheel. It was a late 50's early 60's option. I am told if they where maintained they were ok, but break downs were frequent and repairs costly.

The 540/1000 was not a test, but you could turn the engine ~50% slower just above idle if you put the 540 pto splines on the 1000 output shaft. Worked well baling or raking with a high hp tractor on a low hp job.

Why don't you try the Ford forum and see if any of the other folks ever owned a 9600?

$4000 is small change for that much tractor. When dad retired in '92 his 9600 brought $12k at auction. The guy that bought it is still using it regularly on a big sod farm. You could get by just fine with a smaller machine if you're only working 100 acres, but if you had tillage equipment matched to the tractor you sure wouldn't spend much time in the field - you could pull that 4 bottom plow in road gear if you were able to keep it in the ground!

i havnt used a ford that big but the 7600 was a good machine. that is a lot of tractor for the money !!=) i think it is 135 hp . you are right about the smaller one's being so expensive. if it is mechanically sound that is a great deal!! i'm an ac man but if i needed th hp i would definitly consider it!especially if there is a new holland dealer close by. within an hours drive i mean.

I agree with everyone else plus you can't beat the fuel economy on a Ford. Been around them most my life very little repair.

I often wonder why some of the older designs are not put back in production...

Ford 851
Allis D-17
Jd-x30

They were bullet proof, the common joe could split 'em and replace the clutch over night. You could tune and change the oil on a rainy afternoon without taking out a mortgage. Jeepers this is progress...
