A-C Model B Front End Questions

I have a 1950 A-C Model B that I just got started for the first time in 9 months. Have been going over it and replacing brake linings, changed from 6 volt to 12 volt system, rewired, new muffler, changed ammeter to voltmeter, repainted entire tractor (painted myself; hope I never have to paint for a living; terrible job, but looks better than no paint.); replaced radiator and all hoses, replaced all ignition parts, installed 3-point hitch, etc.

After getting it back together, I have found that the spindle pin bushings need replacing as well as a couple of other repairs on the front end.

Questions:

1. How hard are the spindle pin bushings to replace? I don't have the correct pullers to pull the front end apart.

2. How hard are the front grease seals to replace? Both front wheel bearings are leaking grease around the seals.

3. The pivot pin for the front axle has come unwelded. How vital is it to reweld the head of the pin to the mounting bracket?

Thanks for any input.

PS: That A-C 4-cylinder sure sounds good after 9 months of silence.

You don't need a puller. And it comes apart real easy. If your not going to get into it this weekend I have pictures in my camra that show one tore down. I might be able to post them next week. Yes that head needs to be welded. After removing the steering rod at the spindle, with tires removed, put blocks under both sides of the axel, remove set screws from the front of the steering arms, use a large punch or rod and tap sharply on the top of the spindle and it will slide down and out. You might want to remove the hub first but I normally don't. You can drive the bushings out with a long punch but you will need to find a reamer to fit the new bushings to your spindles. The sesl in the hub is felt and is not a problem unless it has been used with the wheel bearing out and it still is not a big problem. After it is cleaned up you can see how far it is pressed on. If after you have it apart you have questions someone here will help you through it. I can E-mail you the picture also. Good luck these things seem a lot easer after your into it.

Dick,

Thanks so much for the help. You're right. It is a lot easier if someone can give you good info. I look forward to seeing the pictures. Your encouragement is appreciated.

Rick
