I worked for a dairy farmer back in 1964. He had all A.C. equipment. He was an airplane mechanic and could make the WD 45's really run. He bought a six cylinder diesal A.C. in 1964/65 that had eight forward gears. It also had a "multi-power" on the fender that would shift you up or down on the fly. As I remember it would shift up or down two gears,ie. when in third you could hit the multi-power and shift up to fith. On the other hand if you were discing in fith and wanted to gear down for a grade or hard turn then dropping back to third was to much.(slow) Did they change this arrangement later on? Also, it was very difficult to change gears manually, either sitting still or on the fly. I think the A.C. was a 160 or 190. It was a nice tractor to drive and started every time. The only thing I remember that was corrected in the three years I used it was a leaking valve cover gasket. I put several hundred hours on this tractor. Thanks;comments.

The tractor you would be speaking of would be a 190 or 190XT. The "light rear ends" had third and fifth together, and fourth and sixth. But as most of us who owned one found out, this transmission was much too light for the power up front. When AC came out with their "heavy" rear end, the Power Director was geared to produce third and fourth, and fifth and sixth together.
