A/C -B; mag or battery? and-----

A friend has a "B" ('49 +/-) and I don't know if it has a mag or a battery distributor. Whichever it is, it is a Fairbanks Morse unit, and it has a wire coming out of the motor mounting end of it. It cranks on battery, but won't start; no spark. What happens when you undo the two mounting bolts which hold it on to the engine? Anything special to look out for when you do this? How do you time one of these?

Don't mean to sound dumb, but I am not familiar with these types of A/C systems; thanks for any help.

If the wire is fastened to the side of the housing close to where the mounting bolts are and the plug wires come out of the back it would be a mag. If it is a distributor it would have an automotive type distributor cap at the top with the coil wire in the center going to an automotive type coil. There will be no parts fall out when taking the mountings bolts out and removing the mag. Timeing any engine is done the same. (Find and position the timeing mark.) The B Allis has the timeing mark on the flywheel and its position is the center of the clutch housing on the left side, centered in the large center hole. The distribution rotor must point to the terminal that sends voltage to the number one plug. The points need to be just ready to open. (not open)

A B model of that time frame would have been delivered with a magneto ignition system. The easiest way to tell is to look at the distributor cap. If it has a center post with a lead to a coil, it's been altered and is not a magneto system anymore. A magneto does not have a center post on the distributor cap and only has 4 leads going to the 4 spark plugs.

Electric starters were an easy and popular modification for these tractors and it's common to find them.

You need to get a service manual for the tractor anyway so I would suggest getting one now. They cost about $30 and are available through the left hand column of this site under 'MARKETPLACE'. It will answer all these kind of questions complete with pictures.

I recently purchased 5 of these tractors (2 B models, a C and 2 CA's) so I'm learning about them too. The manuals are a must. Good luck.
