Hi
I have what i think is a 1974 d-17, But it need some work. It has a narrow front end and it is loose, is there a way to tighten up the front end or does it need to be replaced? I am thinking about repainting this tractor but it all depends on if the front end can be repaired or not.
This tractor also has a loader on it but one of the cylinders is bad, is there a place were a guy can get new cylinders for it?
One more thing if anyone has any photos of a tractor simular to mine that has been restored then i would greatly appreciate it if you would send me a picture.
I have restored small garden tractors before and would like to try restoring this one to.
Below is a link to my home page were you will see two garden tractors i restored . .http://members.aol.com/jcr6444056/index.html

Hello, the last D17 was made in 1967. If you look at the serial number (stamped on the top left side of the torque tube, where it meets the rear of the motor) you can look up the year on the serial number referance page on this site. Yes you can still get steering gears off of salvage tractors. Quality Tractor has a free parts catalog 1-888-828-3276. I've had good luck at local hydraulic repair shops for work on cylinders. There is a D17 series I picture in the tractor shed on this site. Good luck!

This is what i found for numbers on my d 17 tractor. D17 13129. What do these numbers mean?
I am trying to find out the year and the engine size for this tractor. But i also need to know if the front end (narrow) can be tighten up to remove any slop in it?
Thanks again
John

It is a 1958 with a 226 ci engine. There is no adjustment for the steering wear. You have to replace the worn part.

First of all thanks for the info. It is a great help to me. Now i also have a few more quetions, How hard is it to take that narrow front end off to find the worn part? I checked the steering linkage up to the were it goes into the narrow front end and didn't notice any were up to that point. Is there a place I can get a breakdown of the parts that are in the narrow front end? An assembly print of it would be very useful.
Once again thanks for your help.
John

Simplest thing would be to get a parts book- they're still available from an AGCO dealer (at least I got one a couple years ago). Also, you should be able to get a repair manual as well.
