Ac 1942 C sat out in rain for 5 years with just the motor covered up. Brakes will not work. Are they just rusted up ? Where do I start?

These guys are correct. The C I bought had non-working brakes. They were not froze but would not stop the tractor. The bands were not making any contact. The previous owner said they had been like that for over ten years. The hardest part about fixing the problem was that the adjustment screws were frozen. The whole job takes time and patients!!!! Maybe a good neighbor to chat with during the process. Taking the top plate off and actually being able to see the parts rally helps too- don't be afraid to take parts off to see what you need to, it is worth the time.
Good luck!

I have an Ac 616 garden tractor. The brakes will not work. I don't even know where the brake system is located. There for I don't know where to start looking for the problem. If any body has any ideals or sugestions, I would really appreicate any response.

Fred. I assume that you mean you cannot depress the brake pedal. There's no real hard part in tearing down, derusting and cleaning the brake system except for getting the pivot pins out. Mine I had to drill holes in the inboard side of the housing, then drive them out with a drift punch. Make sure you remove the retainer pins first! Removing the brake band assemblies themselves just takes a little (sometimes a lot)of patience. Once they're removed, you'll probably be amazed at the amount of Mouse House you can get out of there. Good Luck!

A long shot. The break bands are a two piece assembly hinged in the middle . If the hinge is rusted and not permitting movement you could try squirting some oil through the access hole under the axel. Use a light so you can see what you are doing and keep the oil off the break lining and drum. Maybe even pounding upward on a wooden rod placed against the hinge would induce movement. The break toggle ( AC's Name) for the curved lever that tightens the bands may be froze. A little wd40 and a pry lever may start movement or try heat.

Good luck

Ted
