I have an Allis Chalmers D-12 with a 12 volt generator. Amp guage shows no charge and battery went dead. Apparently the generator is not charging. How can I test the generator to determine if it is charging? Can I also test the voltage regulator if it is determined that the generator is working?

If you follow the wires from the two posts of the generator and find which comes from the regulator. I'm pretty sure you can jump that wire (the one from the regulator) to the positive side of the battery and your generator should charge. If not, it's shot. Most auto parts shops can also check out your generator for you but you have to take it in.

If you aren't planning on this being a show tractor, why not upgrade it to an internally regulated alternator? Better performance and it would be about 1/2 the cost of either the generator or regulator repair.
