I have a '49 B, starter spins but does not engage. My starter does not have a broken spring, nor is it a dirty starter. There is a large nut behind the drive gear, hollowed out on the side toward the starter body. The spring extends into the "hollowed" part. When the gear retracts, it comes to rest on the shoulder of the shaft, still spinning when contact is made. Over time the nut and the shaft shoulder wear, until thy fit more tightly together. Eventually they wedge together quite tightly. My starter got so it would stick sometimes, then most of the time, but rapping it with a wrench or a hammer would free it. Then it progressed to where the starter had to be removed to free them up, and you could get one start out of it before it stuck again. The last time I had it off it was very difficult to free it. I know I need another starter, but I just use the crank now.

that no longer uses the spring. E mail or ph 724-376-2489 8-5 eastern if interested.

Emery I guess you have a broken starter spring cause by dirty engage drive gear, easy to happen in cold weather.

Do you guys live near each other? That's a real coincidence. I once looked at a WD that had a serial number within 6 digits of mine. It was located on a farm about 25 miles from where I bought mine so I assume they were both bought at about the same time from the same dealer.
