I have converted my C from 12V back to 6V. New wiring harness, rebuilt generator, rebuilt starter , new battery, new cutout switch, new light switch and magneto switch . Tractor starts great but I get no reading what so ever on the ammeter. I have it all connected just like the wiring digram shows,I do not get a spark when I connect the ground so I don't have a short. I just don't have anything? No charge , no discharge its as though nothing is connected. My best guess at this point is the new light switch is bad , but how can I check it? Help Fred

are you sure that you have the -'s and +'s going to the correct places? Another thing to check would be at the generator to see if you have the cutout going to the field.

"cutout going to the field" ? I have the "Gen" terminal on the cutout connected to the "A" terminal on the generator casing and the "Bat" terminal connected to the negitave teminal on the ammeter and the "field terminal" on generator casing connected to the lt switch. Is that correct? That the way I see the wiring digram? Thanks Fred

Dick, I'm still trying to get a feel for adjusting the 3rd brush and when it should be adjusted. When I loosen the clamp screw, I do not seem to be able to get much movement of the 3rd brush.Which way increases the output, movement towards the nearest brush or away from it? Thanks, Tim

You addressed the question to Dick, but the answer is that the charging rate will be greater as the third brush is moved nearer to the fixed brush. Check the specs for your generator and do not exceed the maximum specified rate. Exceeding that rate may result in a fried generator. Even mustard does not make them palatable. The book may have these specs and explain the brush adjustment. Buy the book for yourself as a gift!

Tim, Did you polarize the new generator?

Rich, Not yet, as I still have some parts left to paint, (too cold right now)eg the platform the battery sits on. The reason I asked my question, I have only been able to get bits and pieces of info on adjusting a 3rd brush gen and I am trying to get a working knowledge. The gen. I have installed is a rebuilt, so I feel it will be adjusted right anyway.I have another one I am "experimenting" with. Thanks for the reply,
Tim

Try doing a continuity check on the switch with an ohm meter also have you polarized the system Larry
