what would be involved in changing a D-17 diesel 12 volt positive to a 12 volt neg?

Converting to negative ground is easy.
1.Rewire your batteries.

2.You will need to replace your voltage regulator with a negative ground one. This is the only piece in your tractor that is not able to be used with either polarity.

3.Repolarize your generator, by touching the battery terminal on the generator(usually marked A for armature), to the positive terminal on the battery. Use a jumper wire, just touch them together for a moment. more time is not a problem, just not needed. All it needs is a touch.

4.Reverse the ammeter connections. In other words, take all the wires from the left terminal & put them on the right, & vise versa. this will make the ammeter needle read the correct direction.
