This is my first tractor I have personally owned, the day I brought it home it got stuck in first gear,I have know removed the gear shift out of the hole in the dust cover and removed all the bolts in the cover and the coveris loose but will only come off about an inch and it seems like the fingers under nesth are caught and holding the cover from coming off,can I pry this cover off or is there something else I should do as not to break something else,I also read that you can stick a big scrwedriver down in the hole and move the gears back in place, but I dont know which way to pry them, so if anyone can help me out it would be much appreciated. Thanks Dave.

Don't pull or pry the shifter cover off.The reverse shifter fork is what's stopping the cover from coming up any farther.Lift the cover up with out putting it into a bind then roll the cover to the left side of the tractor while lifting it the rest of the way off.Replacing the cover can be tricky.Get an IT manual if you don't have one. ct

If it is stuck in gear (not frozen) use a flashlite to look into the shift lever hole (leave the trans. cover in place) and use a long screw driver to reposition the shifting slots (term??) so that they are completely parallel to each other. This should put the trans. back into nuetral. If this keeps happening, then the shift level bottom and/or shift tower collar is probably worn and may need to be replaced or rebuilt. This is a common problem with WD's. Shifting very slowly and carefully can help prevent the problem. Also, search the archives as this is a recurring discussion on this board.

Here's a long shot. What is temp. of tractor? If tractor is very cold, below freezing, water in trans. from bad shifter cover at some time, freezes. My Ford and WD both did that until I drained and changed.
