I am considering getting a smaller tractor and was wondering about the AC 170 and 180's. I have heard that they are bulletproof and that the 170 is just a good ol' D-17 with a new decal, is this true? How is the 4 cylinder Perkins in the 170? What would a 170 and 180 Diesel or maybe gas go for in good to excelent condition? Maybe $5,000,$6,000. Are the parts that expensive from AGCO and do they carry everything? I need a tractor to pull a 3-16 plow, 10' disk, 4-row planter and other jobs.

The 170 and 175 did evolve from the D17. I would not say that they are the same tractor with new decals. You are right though, they are very similiar and I think they are just about the best all around tractor in their size. My brother had a D17. My other brother had a 175, and I own a 175. It has a blown headgasket, I hope, from my getting it hot last summer. The fan belt broke and I went about 10 min. without checking the guage. It was on 240! If you get one of these, expect to pay from $6000 to $7000 in good condition. I would pay more for one in excellent condition. I believe the 175 cost about $14,000 when they quit making it.

I have been looking at a 185 diesel at a local dealer, he wants $7000 and wont come down. My neighbor has the same tractor in gas version. Nice machine, but the gas model really sucks the fuel. Works great as a baler, and general field work. The only problems I know he has had is the radiator plugs easily and has to be blown out when cutting heavy grass. He also lost power steering once while going down the road, and when that happens you have no steering. I have not seen any major repairs put into the tractor at all.

If your neighbors is a gas then it's probably a 180. They didn't make the 185 in a gas version. Not much difference between 180s and 185s though. I have my 185 for sale. New pto clutch and left brake. Engine,trans,hi-lo and hydraulics work good. Has just over 3000 hours. I'm in central Wisconsin. I'm asking $6000 but would take older tractors on trade.
