I'm having trouble keeping a charge in my battery. I'm considering changing the generator to an alternator. Generator is 12v. Should I keep the generator or switch to alternator? What is involved? Can I check my generator to see if it is charging properly? If so, how? Thanks for the help!

there is nothing wrong with the original 12 volt generator design system. To test, open the voltage regulator and open and close the contacts with the end of a pencil, or ground similar to Kevins advice to check the generator. Most people convert to the delco 10SI alternator with internal regulator when their generator goes bad. this is because the generator and regulator could cost over $100. to repair. You can buy a rebuilt alternator at Auto Zone for $35. Delco made a million of them (actually several million) and they came on every chevy built from 1972-1985 (and all GM cars) Most are 40 or 65 amp charge which are gobs big for a tractor. The wiring is fairly simple, but as mentioned before, you need to change to negative ground and switch the terminals on the ampmeter at the same time. This is the best way out, if your generator is proven bad.

IM NOT SURE HOW TO CHECK THE GENERATOR, BUT IF YOU CHANGE TO AN ALTERNATOR I STRONGLY SUGGEST YOU DONT USE A DELCO(GM)ALTERNATOR, THATS WHAT MY D15 HAS ON IT AND IT WONT KEEP THE BATTERY CHARGED AT ALL, I PUT LESS THAN AN HOUR ON IT SINCE I GOT IT AND THE BATTERY WAS COMPLETELY DEAD

Ange,
To determine if it's the generator or the regulator giving you the trouble, do the following, take a reading from the output side of the generator, with the field lead grounded, this should give you full output, if it does not, it should be a generator problem. Remember that it should be a positive ground system on the D 15.
If you go to the simple GM alternator conversion, change the polarity, by reversing the leads on the Battery, ammeter, and coil. HTH
