Any of the air cooled diesels should be checked for buildup of any debris (chaf, mud, oil, fuel, crud of any type) in any of the cooling fins on engine. Very good engines that normally start well in cold climates, but are quickly ruined in ag applications because of overheating caused by buildup on cooling fins. (lack of maintenance) Also check engine oil. crankcase should be kept as full as stick allows. These engines are actually as reliant on oil cooling as air. If oil is low, engine has been run at reduced cooling capacity. Also check for evidence of warning switch that is near cooling fan belt idler. This switch will close when belt breaks, as the idler will roll over and activate this switch, which will then in turn either illuminate a warning light, or sound a buzzer. Steer clear of air cooled engines that are "leakers". This reduces cooling efficiency. The leaks can also be a source of fire hazard. These engines have tinwork covering the cooling fins, but tin is easily removed by releasing latches. Hope this helps.
