I probably don't want to know, BUT ...

Just got a '38 AC-B, and in changing the oil, I felt something loose in the bottom of the oil pan.

She runs great, sounds great, good oil pressure, and the piece doesn't feel like a broken fragment, but whatever it is, it's loose in the bottom of the engine.

Any suggestions before I take the oilpan off?

Thanks!

Sometimes, someone will put a magnet in an oilpan. This is supposed to simplify checking for metal fragments/shavings/whatever as they are attracted to the magnet. Just wondered if the piece in your oilpan might be a magnet.

just read your problem with your B....if item was a magnet, it wouldn't roll around....

not sure what it is....i also have an antique tractor (john deere A-model 1948)....serial no. 66648....that i have restored....i know what you're going through....

just a thought....you could take off top cover, forward of steering column....the oil pump should be right under that....good luck!

Could be the clip and/or the screen on the oil pick-up tube. Shouldn't take long to find out. Hope thats all it is.

Pulling the pan is easy and the best way to really inspect that engine. Go for it.

I would pull the oil pan off to see what the problem is prior to allowing something more serious to happen. It may be nothing, but at least you won't cause any more damage.

I agree; an oil pan gasket is cheap, especially when compared to possible alternatives(like throwing a rod?) . . .
