My grandfather left me his 1938 allis rc. I decided to go from a 6 volt to 12 volt. A motor shop sold me an alternator kit. After putting a new 12 v battery in, the negative ground sparked so I switched cables to positive ground and no sparks. (odd because the 6 v system had been negative ground for at least 6-8 years) now there's sparks when I try to connect the wire to the new alternator. Should I have the alternator switched to positive ground? what else should I do? 12 v. coil/ lights/ ignition switch???

Dean,
Interesting that you say you have a '38 RC. Can or will you post the S/N? I have a '39 RC (#838) and would be interested in discussing them with you.
According to the books I have, a '38 RC will be S/N 1 through 3. I suspect that you need to use a negative ground on your alternator unless it is specifically set up to be positive ground. Since you have gotten sparks when trying to make connections, the alternator may have blown diodes. Before going further I would have the alternator checked to be sure it still functions properly, both unloaded and with a load.

Good luck,
Phil
