I need some advice on changing from a 6 volt generator to a 12 volt alternator with built in regulator, off a mid 60's GM auto.
1. Will the large pulley on the generator fit onto the alternator?
2. Where in the line do you put the chromatic resistor?
3.Changing the positive ground to negative ground 4.Can you just switch the light bulbs inside the lights, any problem doing this?

Ken, how do I get the correct voltage regulator? Automotive or from Allis Chalmers? How do I polarise the system? This WD has a magneto that quit working so was by passed with a coil, suggestion for fixing that?

yes the generator pulley will fit the alternator. Resistor is installed inline between ignition switch and coil.Lights will work pos or neg ground but must change to 12 volt bulbs. Don't forget to reverse wires on back of ammeter so charge will show in proper direction.

just curious as to why you were wanting to convert to a alternator? You can use your existing generator and convert it over to 12v and change the voltage regulator over to 12v. the new replacement regulators can be purchased as a positive or negative ground they will go either way all you have to do is polorize it to pos. or neg. ground. There is nothing wrong with the original systems on these old tractors if they are done correctly.

I like your idea of keeping the generator Ken, can you elaborate on how to convert the gen. from 6 to 12 volts and on polarizing the regulator?
thanks

The altinator you seek can be purchased at any electrical auto service store. The altinator could be a delco single or double wire. The altinator has a built in regulator and the pulley comes with it.You will need to change the grounding on the coil and ,also install a resistor between the ignition switch and coil or, use a 12v coil and resistor before the coil so the points don"t burn up.You will also need a 12v battery and use the NEG. as the ground. The light bulbs work either +or-.Hope this helps.
