where does a guy find the access hole / port to see the flywheel timing marks? i have a A/C manual and all it says is to look for the timing marks, such as the C and F(fire mark) on flywheel but i can't find any access to see such. anyone out there know where they hide this access to marks, i would really appreciate it as i need to time my magneto as i removed it to check it and now am off 1-2 teeth or so as it runs rough and does not advance when throttle up. any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

John, Remember this a 4 stroke engine so when the timing mark is in the hole, the #1 cyl has to be on the compression stroke.(this is when air comes out of the sparkplug hole) Sometimes when doing this by your self, it is easier to take all the plugs out so it turns over without building compression. When you find the marks, one is Top dead center and one is fire. The fire mark comes first. Find it then mark it with a dab of white paint. Duey

You remove the clutch inspection port cover and the 'F' mark will appear in the openning when you use a timing light for it. I always you a dwell meter to double check the point gap before I set the timing. You can vary the timing without varying the dwell, but you cannot vary the dwell without changing the timing.

John, That is the 2 1/2" x 5 1/4" plate on the bottom. Set at wide open throttle, center F mark in the hole. Duey

Dave and Duey,
thanks for the info as the manual I have doesn't give any location info for the timing hole opening and I spent a good part of last sunday looking before I gave up and thought of this site. I was getting ready to take off the plate right below the starter before I stopped as it didn't look right. I will now go under the tractor to look for the plate as described and find the "F" mark I need to see to get magneto timed. i tried to go by holding thumb over #1 but it failed to work for me so now its on to the "F" mark and hopefully a good running tractor.I need to get the magneto timed with the flywheel by what the manual says to get the tractor running right as I know i'm off as it ran real good till I removed magneto to check for wear as I had a little problem with power going up hills. I wish now I would have left it as it was running and I was getting my work done. Thanks again for all the help.

John,

Those timing marks on the flywheel are not always easy to see. May have to clean off some oil or crud.

You also need to be certain the gears in the mag are set up right. You can be a tooth off or so when you put the cap back on it. One gear should be stamped "C" and the other gear will have a beveled tooth. The beveled tooth must line up with the letter c on the other gear. This is in the magneto itself. You then have slotted mounting screws on the mag which let you move the mag back and forth to fine tune it while running. I can do mine by ear but others prefer a timing light.
