Our 6080 leaks oil on the front of the engine. If it is the front main, how long will it last before it needs fixed.

You probably just should replace the seal. The 6080 motor comes out of a combine I believe and has no thrust bearing on the crank, the motor just drove hydrostatic pumps but with a clutch you get alot of pressure on the end of the crank pushing it forward. There was a kit they came out with they put on the front of the crank to help with the lateral movement of the crank, you might need to get one if you don't have one.

Eric D: Your oil leak on the front of your 6080 could potentially be a very serious problem. If you use your PTO a lot and keep your PTO clutch lever in the disengaged position for extended periods of time, you could have a worn thrust main problem causing your leak. You can check for a worn thrust main without removing the base by doing the following. If you have a dial indicator set it up at the front of the engine with the pointer against the front crankshaft pulley. Next make sure that your PTO clutch lever is forward in the engaged position. Pry the crankshaft toward the rear and then zero the dial indicator. After the needle is zeroed you can pry the crankshaft forward and check the reading on the indicator to find out how much thrust or free play you have on the crankshaft. The normal thrust on the crankshaft should be between .007" to .012" of movement. If your movement is within this range then your thrust main is not worn and you can let the seal leak until you decide to replace the seal. If the movement is a great deal more than normal then I would recommend that you have the thrust main replaced as soon as possible because if you continue to run the tractor with a worn thrust bearing you can do serious damage to your engine. I have been an A-C mechanic for 23 years and I have seen this problem a number of times. I hope that you don't find a problem with your thrust main, but if you do you need to have it fixed asap to save yourself big bucks. I hope that I haven't scared you but I want you to know what can happen and how to check for yourself. Have a good day. Gordon
