Can anyone out there please tell me how to test a 3 brush generator from a 1948 Allis chalmers C, it seem as testing generators is a lost art. Thank you in advance.

there are two main terminals on th generator "F" and "A". The F is the field terminal and is wired thru the headlight switch resistor to ground. Basically to test you can connect a wire from "F" to the tractor frame and ground it. This should make the generator go to "wide open" or 10 amp charge. The "A" terminal goes to the cutout relay, what some people call the voltage regulator. It connects to the "G" (generator) terminal of the relay. The other cutout terminal is the "B" or battery terminal. THe "B" terminal has a wire that goes to the amp meter and then the battery. 1. ground the F terminal 2. with the tractor running, open and close the cutout terminals with a small stick. 3.look for movement in the amp meter. 4. if all wires are connected, the cutout points are not burnt, you should see ampmeter move. if not the generator is probably toast. 5. one good test with a volt meter is to see if you have voltage at the "A" terminal with the engine off when you open and close the cutout relay. the battery should go thru the ampmeter thru the relay to the A terminal if all wires are good. Remember the tractor is positive ground. the negative terminal goes to the ampmeter, unless the tractor has been converted. I will e-mail you a print of wiring. It is not uncommon for the light switch to go bad, or loose its ground. Grounding the F terminal on generator will tell you that.
