Looking for a series 4 or newer AC 190xt or 185d Would like a cab. Can anyone give me some stories about these tractors? I would like to know what kind of problems they had how hard is it to maintain them and just general field experiences.
Thanks all information is appreciated,
AJZ

I have heard that if you have a 185, every time you grind a gear shifting the trans, put a 20 dollar bill in a jar in the kitchen. When your gear finally gives out, usually second or third, you would have almost enough money to fix the transmission. While you are in the kitchen counting your cash, or lack of, its not far to reach for a beer.

Don't know about that. The 185 I know has 3600 hours on it and has never been apart. Maybe someone is hard on equipment.

Guy I worked for in high school had 4 190XTs. He was very hard on equipment, and did little if any maintenance. They diesels ran great, are very reliable, and tractor controls were easy to operate. The engine is the best part of the tractor. The transmission gear teeth would regularly chip off every two-three years, the power steering was always a problem, and any trans or clutch problems require splitting the tractor in half.

AJZ I know a guy here in westeren WI that just got done rebuilding a 190XT III Turbo. We are putting it on the dyno Wed. It is nice shape. Has a cab, rebuilt front end and tires are about 70 %. The guy he got it from spun a rod bearing and didn't want to fix it or pay someone to fix it, so this guy bought and rebuilt the engine and pump. He was thinking of selling it, I could find out how much he wants if you like.

My Grandfather bought a 185 new in 1978. This was his big tractor on his small farm. At this time he was farming about 80 acres and a few head of beef cattle. It was very good for planting, manure spreading and other small chores, but like I said this was his big tractor on a farm with heavy soil. He had a Chalmers 4-16 semi mount mono frame plow and when you dropped it to the beams the tractor just didn't quite have the guts. Ther is no such thing as a series 4 190 or 185, there was a serires III 190 XT but all 185's were just 185's. Both tractors had 301 cubic inch engines but the 190 was turboed. The 185 had drop box final drives and the 190 had straight axles. I haven't rally been around a 190 much, I know of a farmer who has one with the injector pump turned up, he pulls a five bottem DMI plow that is hydraulic variable (you can make the bottems larger or smaller from the seat). But this is definetly not tiypical of a 190 XT, more like a 210. Can't go wrong with an orange tractor. Green is yellow!

I kind of laughed to myself when I read the comment that guys would crank up the fuel rate on their 190XT's to get more horsepower.I have a book about Allis-Chalmers farm machinery that had mentioned the same thing-the problem was they were blowing up transmissions and ruining A-C's reputation! The 200 and 220 line was built so there would no longer be a need for the farmer to crank up the fuel rate on his tractor. My neighbor had a 190XT and they used to have to take off the stack to get it into the machine shed. One day his son forgot and cracked the turbo. The turbo was replaced and the tractor dynoed at 130hp!They told him not to run anything bigger than a four bottom 16"plow or the tranny would blow up if it caught on anything.
