'91 Dodge, V-8, Auto, 109.6" wheel base; rear clamp on pinion (part that holds the rear universal) broke off which caused drive shaft to crack and break off (all while the wife was doing 65 mph on the freeway with 6 other women in the car). Checked out some driveshafts in the Pick a Part yards and their sizes really vary. How do I measure mine? From very end of transmission housing unit to the very end of the rear pinion (?)? Does the size matter since some places can resize them? Thanks for whatever advice that comes my way.

I would measure from the center of one needle bearing to the center of the one on the other end. Then measure the dia and length of the internal splined yoke on the transmission end. There used to be two different diameters here. I think the smaller was used on smaller cars etc. so you probably have the larger. There was two different U joints too, both would fit in the same yokes, but one had larger X member and bearings. I have been dealing with dodges since 1972 and played with a number of drive shafts. They can be shortened but you will have to pay for it and it may need to be balanced, best to find one that will fit if you can. To shorten one you need to have a length of drive shaft the same diameter as what is welded to the yoke. they cut the weld and shorten the tube and weldit back on. Good luck.
