Did a 12-volt conversion on a 1942 B Monday with all new wires per the wiring diagrams you prescribed. (mag, keyed ing.,w/push start,--don't have lights yet but will.) Fired it off Monday and everything good!(amp guage good, started good, amp guage initiallly read 30 amps then pretty quick dropped to around 15 amps and then to almost zero after about 20-25 minutes when my time ran out.)Went out of town, came home last night, tried to crank, and the battery was dead as a hammer! Any ideas on where I dropped the ball?

if you are using a delco alternator with an internal regulator, there are two spade terminals on the side. one is F or 2 and has 12 volts all the time. the other is R or 1 and must not have voltage when the motor is off. this terminal is normally run to the key switch and off when key is off. some people put a diode in this line. i normally put a 10 ohm resistor to give a small differential voltage and cause the alternator to charge.

Dale,
Any draw from the battery should read on the amp gauge, however a very small amount might not be easly read. It will be a process of elimination.
First thing that comes to mind could be that when you shut off the ignition, you may have turned the switch to ACC. That would energize components in the alternator that would draw a small amount. If the alternator is the problem, you could try unpluging the vrc148 connecter and leave it overnight to see what happens. Let me know what happens. Duey

Duey and Steve, Thankes for the responses. There is power to both spades on the vrc148 plug in any key position. The key switch has three positions.(off/on/on with lites). What terminal should the white wire be attached to on bach of the switch?(mag, ground, batt,or lite). The wiring diagram shows it goes to the batt terminal. The other wiring diagrams for use with distribtor, push/pull start, solinoid start show white wire to the ACC terminal on back of key switch. If I move white wire to lite terminal on back of my switch it does not have power to spade plug white wire (but does to the red) unless key is in lite position. Would that be ok and would I have to switch key to this position to cause alternator to start charging.

you have a slightly different switch that appears to be setup for a magnito. I assume in the "OFF" position the mag and ground terminals are touching. In the run position or first "ON" nothing is touching. In the third position or "Second ON" the battery is connected to the light terminals. This is a good switch for a mag, but not ideal for the alternator. You can connect to the light terminal and it will charge only when lights are on like Du said. A different type of key switch would have an "ACC" or accessory terminal which would be hot in the first "ON position, but these are normally not for magnito units. Sounds like you got it now.

Dale, You are correct and my wire diagram is wrong. Hooking to the light post on the switch will make it work but the switch has to be in the first position to activate the alternator. Changes are being made!! Sorry about that Dale, you are the first to say anything. Duey

Thanks Duey and Steve for the feedback. Ha!Ha!--Connecting to the lite terminal should work ok as I intend to place lites on a seperate toggle switch. Appreciate ya'lls help. Dale E.
