How do I test a generator to be sure it really is working before installing it on a tractor? I have a 6V power supply, digital VOM, and can spin the generator with an electric drill. I don't know which is the armature terminal & which is the field terminal. How can I determine this by looking inside the gen? Thanks in advance...James

P.S. The replacement generator is not the correct one for the tractor.

spin the generator with an electric motor and measure the output between the two terminals with your volt meter. if it is backward it will measure negative output. without load you will probably get a reading of 10-15 volts. all you are really trying to do is figure out negative and positive. the ground terminal should be the field terminal. the field always connects to the tractor frame ( ground) can be positive or negative. the armature terminal is the charge wire and goes thru the cutout or voltage regulator to the battery (ampmeter). with 6 volt system i assume you have positive ground and the 6 volt armature terminal (negative) will go to the cutout relay. you can connect the battery to the generator while running on the bench. dont need a regulator. run for a few minutes. it will charge about 8-10 amps and run 7 volts, probably. again, check the generator output with a voltmeter first to find the positive (field) terminal. i can send out a picture of a general schematic internal of generator and voltage regulator.
