i have a 1938 a.c. b tractor, took the head off and had a valve job done on it, put head back on and it ran good for about 10 minutes, then would foul out the plugs, put new ones in and same thing. so i decided it was bad rings, took the head back off and there was oil on top of all 4 pistons. got to looking at the head and i can not find any valve stem seals, are they to have some type of seal. please help. thanks mel

mel you didnt mention excess smoke, perhaps old fuel, perhaps carb trouble or even vac leaks, a good machinist usually wont miss valve guide reaming or replace somethingto think about.... good luck

No valve seals were ever used on those tractors, but worn guides would cause problems. More likely, the piston rings failed to hold the increased compression from the valve job. Now it needs rings.

mel, my '52 dont have any seal either. That much oil is probably coming up around the rings. You did not say if the engine was running well before the head job. If it has been setting for a long time, or stuck, i would guess the oil rings are stuck to the piston grooves. If it was o.k. a few weeks ago prior to the head job, it makes you believe the top end might have a problem, but i can figure out what it would be. One thing you could do is start up with the valve cover off and watch. It dont put out much oil so you should not drownd. It would be real hard to get that much oil thru the valves in that short of a period of time.
