My 50's model ca "hunts" at idle, but is fine under load. Is there anything I can do to help with this or is it a sign that somthing worse is about to happen?

Most of the time you can get that out with a carb adjustment.

Thanks guys, I'll check the carb. This tractor had been sitting in a field for the past ten years. Owner said come get it out of my way if you want it.After getting all the water out of the engine and drive line and replacing with new oil, we couldn't believe it ran.I've not tinkered with the carb or ignition...yet. The carb does leak badly when fully choked though.

Don't some of these have a spring behind the carburator in the linkage to the throttle that may dampen out the hunt?

Your correct, they should have a surge spring but a lot of the old tractors do not have them any more. You can most of the time get the carb adjusted to where the surge is gone.

The original Zenith carb doesn't have an adjustable main jet. Only the idle mixture can be adjusted. There is supposed to be a spring from a hole in the rod from the governor to the carb hooked to one of the manifold studs next to the aircleaner. Replacing the spring if its missing will be easier than tearing the carb apart. Hope this helps, Brian.
