I just purchased a 1952 CA with the single wheel narrow front option. Are these front end set-ups unusual for the CA? I grew up in the Midwest and never saw these type front ends on tractors until moving to southeast Texas.

not really uncommon. most C and CA tractors came with narrow front ends, but most did have dual wheels, not one. It was an options, but i dont think rare. Lots of tractors were built this way in the 40-50's. Look at the IH and JD tractors.

Was the single front wheel option something that was especially useful for the cultivation of southern crops, like peanuts, cotton or tobacco? I have seen many IH's, JD's and BF Avery's set up like that in Texas, but not in Illinois.

The single wheel front for the CA allis is rare. I just had one and it sold for good money before I could even unload it. The single wheel fronts are out there just not alot of them. Tractor Rod

Allis Chalmers data Book by Terry Dean shows only 460 single front wheel units built as compaired to 21,410 narrow, dual front built. You got a real keeper in this rare tractor setup.

Thanks for all the comments. I grew up on the farm in Illinois driving a WD-45 row crop gas, WD row crop gas, and D-14 wide front gas, so I have some appreciation for the history of AC. My CA is in average working condition with the orignal 6-volt system intact. I bought it from a hobby farmer up in central Texas that needed a category one three point tractor; he didn't know about conversion kits, so he bought an 8N. I just ordered a "Worksaver" brand 3-point conversion hitch for the CA (that set me back, paid over 1/2 what I paid for the tractor!), and I'll use it to maintain a few acres I own northwest of Houston. I may take take a shot at restoring it to preserve a somewhat less common example of AC's heritage.
