When I bought this tractor it had an automotive starter with a solnoid-(pull start lever removed with a generic keyed ignition)...The wiring is/was quite a jury rig-no harness-wires running amuk. The tractor has an alternator and is run by a distributor.

The automotive type starter broke and I am installing a pull type starter off of my parts tractor as well as rewiring everything and adding lights.(Unfortunitly my parts tractor has a generator and a mag...copying the wiring aint a gonna work.) The instrument panel has only an ammeter, key ignition (new-3 terminals), and I have added a switch for lights. The positive battery cable has a jumper wire.

My major question is what to do with the two wires coming back from the alternator. (One is marked battery.) And heres what I THINK I know...I'll need help with the rest.(Electrical is definitly my weakness). Bat terminal on ingition switch to positive battery cable jumper wire(?). Ign terminal to coil. Acc terminal to lights. Charge side of ammeter to starter. From here Im not really sure. Should I have a fuse anywhere? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I thank you in advance
Higest Regards,

Steve

the R or 1 spade terminal on the side of the alternator must be switched "off" when tractor not running. connect to the "accessory" on key switch. The F or 2 terminal spade on alternator goes to 12 volt, just connect it to the 1/4 inch lug on back of the alternator. The bil lug (1/4 inch) on the back of the alternator goes to the amp meter - side. The + side goes to the battery +. You have a negative ground system. I will send you a small diagram of the alternator wiring. You have the "key" wiring correct. + is battery, "acc" is lights and "ign" is the coil.

Thank you for the response. I dont think I added my e-mail link for the pic...I have now.

I noticed a jumper wire from one of ignition terminals to the ammeter...dont remember which terminal or ammeter side. Why is this connection made? From reading your post--Is this connection from the R or 1 terminal to the "acc" post then THRU to the (-)side of the ammeter? (This connection is also mentioned in a "useless" to my situation wireing diagram found in my re-print operators manual...it says "used if the tractor has a distributor".)

The reason I asked about a fuse is that I have seen one as part of a WD 45 electrical system (generator)-I am assuming that the fuse is in case the cut out terminal on the generator fails...I dont think I need one...Correct?

Your help (and others) is greatly appreciated.

Highest regards

Steve

We build original type wiring harnesses for farm tractors, and we can custom build a harness for your alternator conversion. We label each wire, and include a connection sheet. We also have original type light switches with the "hour glass" shaped knob and fuse for use with regulator or alternator charging systems. Contact us for more detailed information, and see our web site for pricing on original type harnesses. www.wiringharnesses.com

Thanks Jim

I'll be ordering a new harness when I restore the tractor this summer. For now...I just have to get it running for snow removal. (Very strong running WD with the "45" conversion and it's my only tractor with a loader and back-blade.)
