I have a 47 allis b.The engine runs fine. After running a while water will gush up out of the radiator. The water level goes down, and after a while it will do it again.I took the radiator off put garden hose in.Water comes out the other end as fast as I put it in.Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

there may not be anything wrong with it. does the temp gauge work? if water is not flowing, maybe the thermostat is broken/ stuck closed. how do you know it surges, are you running with the cap off?? if so, engines will have a tendancy to do this as they warm up and the air/ water expands. if water is coming out (air pressure) constantly then you would have a bad head gasket and pressurizing the radiator. with a good cap on the radiator, what does it do to make you think you have a problem?

Just went through this myself. I thought it may be a bad head gasket, but looking in the radiator cap right after I started it up I did not see any air bubbles (which is characteristic of a head gasket leak). I had a leaky (read rotten) radiator, so I paid the $200 for a new one. I also replaced the hoses and the thermostat while I was at it. The culprit? Two bolts. Mine has an alternator and has a skinny belt for that reason. Two bolts holding the front grill on were originally place head-inside bolt-outside. I reversed them for a better appearance and forgot to check fan clearance. The fan hit the bolts and stopped. The alternator ran so I saw it turning, but the belt slipped (without smoking, no less) on the water pump pulley. No water pumping, so it did what you mention. Man, some days you just don't think of everything!

My guess is probably a faulty thermostat or a bad water pump. You can completely remove the thermostat and it will run fine - cool, but fine - if you want to check that one item. Up north I wouldn't recommend leaving it out (here in SC we can get away with that if we don't use it much in the winter). I would guess the water pump leaks if it's bad, but no guarantee on that. Just sounds like no circulation.
