48 C locked in gear(s)?

My brother just purchased a '48 C, like our grandfather used to have. He tells me that its transmission won't shift and appears to be locked in two gears. I've had some wrenching experience on both Case & I-H, but don't know a thing about AC's. When an I-H locks, you can remove the shift lever & use a screw driver or pry bar to set the forks into the proper position. Haven't looked at it, but can you do something similar to this old girl, or do you have to take it clear apart? Or is there something that we're overlooking & should be aware of? Thanks in advance for any advice. Sure glad that there is a forum like this & guys w/experience that'll help us fools that love old iron, no matter what color it is. (My $0.02 worth. jal-SD)

I had that happen to me a couple weeks ago on my B.There is a snap ring holding the shifter in place.Pry it out and give the shifter a sharp tug upward and it will pop out.Look down through the shifter hole and you will see the sockets where the shifter engages the forks.Line up the forks in the neutral position and replace the shifter.Thats all there was to fixing mine. When you look in the shifter hole, neutral will be obvious.
The B and C transmission are the same so this should get you running again.Hope I was able to help you.

Here is some pictures that might help. I could add some pictures to this if you need to see something you don't understand.

In other words, ya gotta take it apart to get them unlocked-there is no "quick-fix". To take it apart, ya gotta split the old girl, right? (Another $0.02 worth. jal-SD)

Aint which I meant. Take the plate off that the shifter forks are attached to on the right side. If the forks are not broke or bent the gears might be rusted fast. I had a picture of the shifter forks in one of the albums on photopoint and thought I had them all dug up and put on fotki. I didn't see it on a quick search. If ya wants ta see it I will have to look around or shoot a nudder picture fer ya.

You may not have to split it apart!
Take the cover off to the side and below the shifter. All your gears are right there,The shift lever, if you can move it,it has to jiggled to get the cover off,or there is a "C" clip down in the shifter hole you have to remove to pull the lever out. There problobly is no shifter boot on this allowing water right into those gears!!
Good Luck
