My 170 Allis jumps out of third gear when heading downhill as soon as load lets off of engine. What do I look for? Thanks

AC are well known for hoping out of gear. My 180D and 185 both do it. The problem is worn gears. I always use 3rd when baling. You have to split the tractor which is not that hard, but takes some time to do. Gears are very expensive for them. Good luck fixing it.

Sid; The most likely cause of the problem you discribe is either worn gear or a worn or bent shift fork in the transmission. You did'nt mention if all speeds are affected or just one. If all speeds are doing this, you may well have worn input shaft or main shaft pilot bearings, these will allow the shafts to wobble in the case causing this type of problem. Unfortunately this requires splitting the tractor to repair. Good Luck.
