2 days ago it worked fine before a friend borrowed it. Now the clutch won't disengage. I tried adjusting it, taking the play out of the pedal travel, but still won't disengage. I was lucky I didn't go through the back wall of the shed. By reading through similar problems in the archives, it seems that there are 2 likely possibilities. Either something is broken on our around the clutch fork, or the clutch plates are stuck together. Of course I would rather not split the tractor to find out, but it may be necessary. Any suggestions?

Well, it sounds kind of suspicious since it came back that way after a friend borrowed it. However, over the last 20 years, I've seen my dad's 185 do this twice. What he does it get under the tractor, pop off the cover underneath the clutch, a spray some penetrating oil on the clutch shaft. Park the tractor on a hill so that the oil can run down the shaft toward the clutch. Seems like it happens after prolonged work in really dusty conditions. Has been several years since it's done it last. I think the clutch plate just sticks on the clutch shaft from a lot of fine dirt getting gummed up in it. The clutch pedal still feels normal when you step on it with this problem. If you don't feel anything when you step on the clutch, then you probably will need to split the tractor.

Sounds like the throw out bearing locked up and wore the fingers off the pressure plate. You will need to split to repair.
