I have a Allis B Engine. I had my crank turned .20 and I installed a new shim set under each cap. I used plastigage under main caps and have .003 clearance. Im not sure but the crank seems a little tight but it is the same all the way around.(maybe normal) I did not check bearing crush because I used a new set of shims. Is it possible using new shims, new bearings, that bearing crush is wrong and binding crankshaft. Also should I try to get clearance from .003 to .002 or is it ok. Is there any way of testing the amount of drag( or resistance) a crank should have after it is torqued to specs.

I am restoring a 1941 C Allis, s/n 11756 for an FFA tractor restoration project. Were did you get the shim kit for the bearings. No one I have talked to could find these, and there isnt an Agco dealer in my area. Any help, or info on C's would be appreciated!

Not sure on this engine but lots of engines I have seen do not have holes in the rod bolts for cotter keys or safety wire. What they should have is castilated nits or nuts with holes in them for the safety wire. Wire them together so if either trys to loosen it is also trying to tighten the other one.

Shoot me an email and I will explain how to file the bearings to make them fit. I can also get out a set of bearings and take some pictures on how it is done if needed.

I rebuilt a ac C last year and yes getting the berrings right
is a bear first do not let the shims touch the crank 2ed do not use any lube when using the plastigage check each one adj. the shims until it is right clean and remove it go to the next the book calls for .001 to.002 .003 may cause low oil pres now after all berrings are adj. and cleaned coat with STP renistel and retorq. will spinn hard at first use saftey wire KEEP CLEAN

THANKS for all the info. There are no holes for the safety wire on this engine. Also no holes in rod bolts for cotter pins. This Engine is one of the last B models made in mid to late 50s. I also have a 1944 engine and it has the holes.

i would a whole lot rather have them 1thou.loose than 1thou. tight u will fry your crankshaft.

One question. Is there any lubrication in the bearings? When you overhaul an engine, you should always put engine rebuilding grease in the bearings to provide lubrication at first start up. If the bearings are dry, I'm sure it will turn a little hard. If I remember correctly, bearing clearance in a D17 is supposed .001-.003 so it should be ok on your B. Consult a shop manual though to make sure.
