Ok Here's the deal. I owned this 38 B years ago, Late 70s. I just reaquired it. At that time I just wanted "Running" , now I want original or as close to original as possible. I fabricated the seat frame from old bed rails. ( at least I think I did, I can't recall for absolutely sure). Anyway I now have a very rusty seat frame that would be simple to fabricate. Can anyone tell me exactly what size angle Iron was used to make the originals? Are bed rails OK as a similiar replacement material? Thanks in advance. Rich

I'm about done with my '38 and had to build a seat frame too. Though I have piles of bed frame steel, It's poor steel (that's why it rusted out so fast) and not quite large enough to match OEM.

AC used some pretty light guage stuff on their seat frames but if you use 1.5" to 2" angle stock, it will look original enough and won't raise an eye at show.

When AC added hydraulics to the PTO, they raised the sides of the seat to 2" x 4.5" angle to allow room for hoses underneath.

For my seat frame, I had some 2x2 angle for the front and back pieces and then decided to use some 3x4 for the sides. The stock seat sits too low for me and is more comfortable with an extra inch of height. I also made the seat cushion and used blue marine vinyl to set off the decal set that's still to come.

(I could be another Martha Stewart but I don't deal in stocks.)

IF YOU ARE TRYING TO KEEP IT ORIGINAL, THE SEAT COVER WAS GREEN CANVAS OVER COIL SPRINGS WITH SOME PADDING
GOOD LUCK WITH YOUR RESTORATION, RICH.

WOW! Anybody else having NJ's weather? It's been rain since march. Anyway, Thanks Bob and Tyler. I'm gonna revise my plans although I don't have a ready supply of 1 1/2"-2" angle iron. I think I'm gonna stick woth the bed rails. From what you say, they will be close enough and should the right material come along, it's not a big deal to change. Bed rails are tempered to be springy I believe. They will destroy a hack saw blade or a un oiled drill fairly quickly. I've built all sorts of trailers and other stuff with them and had good results. The reason that the other ones rusted out was that they were exposed to the weather for twenty five years with little or no paint or other protection. I originally welded them in 1978. About the seat, Can you give me any idea what kind/weight of canvas was used originally? What color it was? Dark green or a light green? did it use piping along the edges? I guess Allis was making a fashion statement with that green canvas and the Persian orange. Sort of a late thirties art deco. What was the canvas attached to? Was it stapled to the bottom steel edge of the spring assembly or did it have a wooden base? How was the backrest made? What was it made of? Some I see look like pressed steel. some look like plywood. the one in tyler's pic looks like it might be a piece of hard urethane or something similiar. Thanks again for your help! Regards, Rich

My backrest is just painted steel that's been wet sanded and waiting for the last coat. I've seen pics of the wood ones though.

I wondered what they used before foam rubber. I think I can work up a spring seat that will get me better suspension than that foam. When it bottoms out.... so does mine.
